Prescribed burns scheduled today across the Lower Peninsula
A number of prescribed burns are scheduled today across the Lower Peninsula, including in Charlevoix, Huron, Ogemaw and Washtenaw counties. For Dexter Township specific questions, please contact the MDNR at 866.922.2876.
The burns and their estimated start times are:
- 10 a.m.: 108 acres in Huron County’s Paris Township to enhance growth of warm season grasses and plants.
- 11 a.m.: 202 acres in Washtenaw County’s Dexter Township to reduce shrubs and conifers to provide habitat needed for eastern massassauga rattlesnakes.
- 11 a.m.: 117 acres in Ogemaw County’s Foster Township to create open clearings that support habitat needed for deer and turkey.
- 11 a.m.: 94 acres in Charlevoix County’s Chandler Township to remove overgrown brush and shrubbery to maintain open clearings that support deer, turkey and grouse.
Prescribed burns are one way the Michigan Department of Natural Resources keeps lands and forests healthy. The burns are conducted by highly trained DNR personnel in designated state-managed areas during appropriate weather conditions and in cooperation with the proper authorities and local units of government.
Public safety is a top priority during all prescribed burns, which sometimes are canceled at the last minute due to careful monitoring of weather and wind conditions.
