Dexter Township

Curbside Collection

Residents can visit WM’s dedicated Dexter Township community landing page by clicking the banner above for helpful information about the Township’s new waste and recycling program. The page serves as a central resource where residents can access important program details and service guidelines. Available information includes the Dexter Township Service Guide, pickup schedules and holiday service updates, bulk item disposal guidelines, recycling guidelines, and quick access to submit service requests or contact WM.

Residents can also find instructions for trash, recycling, yard waste, and bulk collection services. While the community landing page will be fully functional beginning April 1, 2026, residents are encouraged to create a profile now and become familiar with the page and its features.

The Dexter Township Board of Trustees approved the signing of a contract with Waste Management (WM) to become the single trash hauler in Dexter Township, effective April 1, 2026. This means that only Waste Management will be authorized to perform curbside trash removal in Dexter Township.

If you have not completed the enrollment form with Dexter Township, you will need to establish service through WM directly after April 1, 2026. In the meantime, please make sure you contact your current provider and cancel your service with them by March 31, 2026 and request they come and collect their carts by April 17, 2026. Please note that if your cart is not collected by April 20, 2026 you will be able to complete a cart collection survey that will be available on the Dexter Township website until May 11, 2026.

Other Important Reminders:

  • WM enrollment freeze will take place the beginning of March and will last until April 1, 2026 due to WM data processing.
  • If signing up for services directly with WM on or after April 1, 2026, you will be charged a $50 per cart delivery on your first WM bill.
  • Again, please make sure you contact your current provider to cancel service by March 31, 2026 and request cart removal by April 17, 2026.

Timeline Update:

  • March 2-7, 2026: Enrolled homes will receive WM service packet in the mail (note that residents who sign up after February 20, 2026 will need to obtain a copy of the service packet at the Township Hall or can request one via email).
  • March 16-20, 2026: WM cart deployment to enrolled homes (unless otherwise specified in enrollment form).
  • April 1, 2026: Service with WM begins Township wide. Homes not enrolled may now contact WM directly to start service if enrollment deadline is missed.
  • April 20, 2026: Dexter Township will communicate with residents regarding excess cart removal. Please stay tuned as more information will be coming out via In the Loop and the Township website.

Single Hauler FAQs

What is a single hauler?

“Single hauler” means one company is authorized to pick up refuse, recyclables and compost at the curb within Dexter Township. No other providers can legally operate within the Township.

Who is the provider?

The provider is WM (formerly Waste Management).

Why is Dexter Township moving to a single hauler?

This initiative contributes to the Township’s four strategic priorities:

  1. Community Enrichment: Our residents who want curbside collection will save money, as the cost for curbside collection is significantly cheaper.
  2. Communications: The Township will have a relationship with WM, which will help ensure clear and consistent communication and service levels.
  3. Good Government: Reducing the number of very heavy garbage trucks on the roads protects our investment in gravel roads maintenance. Our contract with WM ensures consistent and reliable service.
  4. Environmental Stewardship: The Township’s contract with WM ensures recycling and compost will be properly handled.
What services are available?

Weekly pickup of trash, recycling, and yard waste.

Trash – which includes free collection of one bulk item the first service day of the month. Bulk items must be scheduled for collection, which can be done online 24/7/365.

  • A 96 gallon cart will be provided. Free cart delivery if you sign up by January 31, 2026.

Recycling – for plastic, paper and cardboard, metal, and glass. Please visit WM’s Recycling 101 for more information about what you can and cannot recycle.

  •  A 96 gallon cart will be provided. Free cart delivery if you sign up by January 31, 2026.

Yard Waste – such as grass clippings, leaves, branches, brush and small amounts of food waste between the first full week of April and second full week of December.

  • Yard waste will be collected in your own paper lawn leaf bags or a 32 gallon container.

Bulk Items – One item per month at no extra charge – first week of the month pickup with preset scheduling.

What will it cost?

Residents will be billed directly on a quarterly basis. The first-year quarterly flat rates for each service are listed below.

  • Trash: $40.56
  • Recycle: $29.25
  • Yard Waste: $22.50

Should you choose to have curbside trash and recycling services, your total quarterly cost for example would be $69.81

Am I required to participate?

No. You are not required to participate in curbside collection. However, if you do want curbside collection, you must use WM as your vendor.

How do I sign up?
  • Current WM Customers: If you currently contract with WM for curbside services, your account will automatically roll into the single hauler program effective April 1, 2026.
    • If you would like to keep your service level the same, do nothing.
    • If you would like to add or subtract services or receive new equipment, fill out the enrollment form
  • Customers of Other Providers: If you use a provider other than WM:
    • Terminate services with your current provider effective March 31, 2026. Ask your current provider to pick up your cart(s) by April 17, 2026.
    • Fill out the single hauler enrollment form.
  • Homeowners Association Residents:
    • If you are part of a Homeowners Association that does not manage curbside collection on behalf of its residents, fill out the single hauler enrollment form.
    • If your Homeowners Association manages curbside collection, your Homeowners Association will handle the sign up and you need do nothing.
    • Not sure whether or not your HOA handles your curbside collection? Contact info@dextertownshipmi.gov
What if I want to use a different provider for curbside collection?

Effective April 1, 2026, WM is the ONLY provider authorized in Dexter Township.

What is the deadline to sign up?

January 31, 2026 is the sign-up deadline to receive free, no-cost delivery of waste carts. Enrolling by January 31, 2026 ensures you avoid a cart delivery fee. WM will send residents a packet of information to fully establish their account with them in February 2026 and in March 2026 WM will send the first billing for services in April – June.

What if I miss the deadline?

After January 31, 2026, you will still be eligible for favorable pricing; however, you will be subject to cart delivery fees of $50 per cart.

What do I do with my old equipment?

All carts are the property of your current provider and should be collected following service conclusion. Carts not collected as of April 21, 2026, will be considered abandoned. More information on abandoned cart disposal to be provided – stay tuned.

Can I pause my service while I’m away?

You may pause your service for a minimum of 30 days up to nine months. A resume date is required to process your request, but no reactivation fees will be charged when service restarts.

What if I throw non-recyclables in the recycling cart by mistake?

Placing non‑recyclables in the recycling cart is known as “Wishcycling.” While it’s often done with good intentions, it reduces the effectiveness of our recycling system.

If this happens, residents will first receive a warning along with helpful information about proper recycling. After two warnings, a $15 fine will apply.

When in doubt, throw it out! If you’re unsure whether an item can be recycled, place it in the trash.

Are there additional requirements or penalties for residents?
  • All materials must be placed inside carts with lids fully closed. Extra bags or personal containers set outside the cart will not be collected. After two warnings, a $15 fine will be assessed.
  • Carts that are too heavy for safe collection, as well as bulk items that are unprepared or improperly prepared, will not be collected. In either case, a service tag will be placed on the cart or item explaining why collection could not be completed.
  • If a payment is more than 60 days past due, service will be suspended. Accounts unpaid beyond 90 days will be terminated. Late fees will apply throughout the collections process. If service is reactivated, residents may be charged returned payment fees, reactivation or redelivery fees, and any costs related to debt collection. Depending on the outstanding balance, a deposit may also be required.
Are there requirements or penalties for WM?

Yes. Dexter Township’s contract with WM requires timely, high‑quality service and includes penalties for non‑performance. If you have a complaint or concern, please contact WM Customer Experience. If the issue is not resolved to your satisfaction, you may then reach out to Dexter Township for assistance. In addition, WM provides Dexter Township with regular reports on customer complaints and how they are resolved.

What About the Green Bins in the Township Parking Lot?

The green bins in the Dexter Township parking lot are funded by a WWRA Special Assessment District (SAD) where $31 is added to each residential winter tax bill. This SAD is coming up for renewal in the near future, but no decisions have been made at this time. More information regarding the WWRA SAD will be shared in 2026.
